Apache (mod_rewrite and .htaccess)

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

There is something you need to think of in order to use mod_rewrite on an Apache webserver you migth encounter problems when when uploading your .htaccess file with your mod_rewrite directives:

403 Access Denied

Your need to add the following lines to you vhost configuration file.

<Directory "/home/www/web1/html">
AllowOverride All
Options +FollowSymLinks +SymLinksIfOwnerMatch
</Directory>

If you’re using confixx you better ass this to your httpd.conf file, because changes to the vhost configuration files will be overwritten by confixx.
After restarting the Apache webserver you can upload you .htaccess file containing your mod_rewrite directives e.g. as shown below.

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>
